Our Latest Champion

Christians are all abuzz of our latest Christian champion riding her charger into battle with the secular media establishment.  Carrie Underwood has thrown down the gauntlet and professed her determination to sing about her faith.  The evangelical church has immediately gone into a swoon because very rarely do any of the really famous people in the world say that they are on our side.  Finally, we have a big name who justifies our right to be people of faith.

Hold on a minute.  Are we really this desperate?  The song that created this tempest is hardly one worth dying for.  The point of this song is to describe a life changed by baptism and the catch line is "there must of been something in the water."  Really?  I'm a Baptist and I understand believer's baptism as being very important, but nothing changed because of the water.  It is Jesus who changes hearts and minds, not the baptismal tank.  The name Jesus is not even mentioned in the entire song.

Let's go further than the song.  Carrie Underwood is outspoken in her support of homosexual marriage rights.  In fact, the pastor of her church, GracePointe Church in Franklin, Tennessee has just accepted homosexual unions.  Carrie Underwood spoke at her church in favour of these unions.  Is this really the champion we want of our religious liberties?

Why do we do it?  We grasp at the straw of the latest celebrity who seems to validate our faith.  We could compile a list of these individuals who have made shipwreck of their own faith and managed to stain the name of the church along the way.  My friends, we have but one hero.  His name is Jesus.  He validates our faith.  He is the one to whom we must point.  And, by the way, He will never let us down.

In the meantime, pray for Carrie - don't worship her.

Quotation of the Week

“Avoid trivial pursuits. You are a child of God, destined for glory, and called to do great things in His Name. Do not waste your life on hobbies, sports, and other recreational pursuits. Do not throw away the precious moments of your life on entertainment, movies, and video games. Though some of these things can properly have a 'small place' in the Christian’s life, we must be careful not to give undue attention to temporal and fruitless activities. Do not waste your life. Employ the time of your youth in developing the character and skills necessary to be a useful servant of God.”   Paul Washer
